چکیده

In this study we demonstrate how very-long period (VLP) volcanic seismic signals can be processed in order to obtain essential and detailed information about the seismo-volcanic source process. As an example use VLP signal observed on 23 March 2012 during outgassing event at Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat, acquired by instruments with different natural periods. The aim of is highlight importance retrieving correct time function a complete restitution When ground displacement cannot retrieved through process due very narrow band-pass limited instrument response, compare synthetic waveforms velocity domain determine best model generating seismogram using band-limited seismometer characteristics. Furthermore, show approach forward modelling reveal much more detail process, since small changes are enhanced seismogram. Using these restituted modelled displacements perform moment tensor inversion combined grid search locating 600 m depth below sea level estimating volume change range 0.6?1.1 × 103 m3.

The bioreactivity of the sub-10 μm component of volcanic ash: Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat.

With the recent eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyafallajökull and resulting ash cloud over much of Europe there was considerable concern about possible respiratory hazards. Volcanic ash can contain minerals that are known human respiratory health hazards such as cristobalite. Short-term ash exposures can cause skin sores, respiratory and ocular irritations and exacerbation of pre-existing lu...

Controls on variations in cristobalite abundance in ash generated by the Soufrière Hills Volcano , Montserrat in the period 1997 to 2010

The Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV) crystallizes cristobalite (crystalline silica) in its lava domes, and inhalation of cristobaliterich ash may pose a chronic respiratory hazard. We investigate the causes of variation in cristobalite abundance (measured by X-ray diffraction) in ash from dome collapses, explosions and ash venting from 1997 to 2010. Cristobalite abundance in bulk dome-collapse ash...

Long range transport and fate of a stratospheric volcanic cloud from Soufriere Hills volcano, Montserrat

Volcanic eruptions emit gases, ash particles and hydrometeors into the atmosphere, occasionally reaching heights of 20 km or more, to reside in the stratospheric overworld where they affect the radiative balance of the atmosphere and the Earth’s climate. Here we use satellite measurements and a Lagrangian particle dispersion model to determine the mass loadings, vertical penetration, horizontal...

Geodetic constraints on the shallow magma system at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat

[1] Ground surface tilts recorded proximal to a growing lava dome, and sustained through repeated dome collapses, provide unique geodetic constraints on the depth, size, and overpressures of the shallow magmatic system at Soufrière Hills Volcano. Tilt records identify a single pressure-source inflating with periods 3–30 h. Sustained tilt amplitude ratios for paired stations identify the pressur...

Sensitivity of OMI SO2 measurements to variable eruptive behaviour at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat

Since 2004, the satellite-borne Ozone Mapping Instrument (OMI) has observed sulphur dioxide (SO2) plumes during both quiescence and effusive eruptive activity at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat. On average, OMI detected a SO2 plume 4-6 times more frequently during effusive periods than during quiescence in the 2008-2010 period. The increased ability of OMI to detect SO2 during eruptive peri...
